Martins Bank 1928+

Sep 1.jpg

Another waste of resources? Not at all Ė Martins Bankís newly built branch at St Johnís opens in 1967, only to close again in 1969, but even when preparations for a merger are far advanced, things could always go wrong. Therefore the Bank continues to open Branches with Martins fittings and signage, right up to the summer of 1969.

This mosaic of the Martinsí grasshopper logo has yet to be added to the building in the image above, but you can see it in situ below. The merger with Barclays comes with the perils of branch duplication and the business of Martinsí Branch at St Johnís is transferred to Barclays Worcester Cathedral Branch.†† So so please enjoy your chance to see what some customers saw for less than two yearsÖ During the short period of time that St Johnís is open to the public, a nightsafe service is available, and the branch offers full banking hours, six days a week. The branch was obviously designed for long term use, which makes it all the more sad that it had to go...
