Martins Bank 1928+

Another waste of resources?  Not at all – Martins Bank’s newly built branch at St John’s opens in 1967, only to close again in 1969, but even when the  preparations for a merger are far advanced, things could always go wrong.  Therefore, the Bank continues to open Branches with Martins fittings and signage, right up to the summer of 1969.

This mosaic of the Martins’ grasshopper logo has yet to be added to the building in the image above, but you can see it in situ below. The merger with Barclays comes with the perils of branch duplication and the business of Martins’ Branch at St John’s is transferred to Barclays Worcester Cathedral Branch.   So so please enjoy your chance to see what some customers saw for less than two years… During the short period of time that St John’s is open to the public, a nightsafe service is available, and the branch offers full banking hours, six days a week. The branch was obviously designed for long term use, which makes it all the more sad that it had to go...

Another photograph from Keith Mason, shows that St John’s Branch building is still very much with us in the Twenty-First Century. It is sad for us to see that the grasshopper is long gone from the stonework of the rather odd corner of the building…
