Brave new world…

1938 COA.jpgThe culmination of several years’ planning and building work,  is the £2Million Team Valley Trading Estate at Gateshead.  The centrepiece is a TWO MILE LONG boulevard – Kingsway,  and proudly serving customers from a brand new building is Martins, the first bank there, and conveniently situated next door to the post office.

Being first doesn’t last long, and the following year Barclays sets up business in an identical looking building over the road!  Martins’ Team Valley Estate Branch features both in the original 1964 Martins publication “Starting a Business in Britain” and its 1967 reprint, showing this aerial view of the trading estate.

Like peas in a pod?  This weird mirror image shows Martins Bank at Team Valley in 1938 and Barclays in 1939. Despite these Branches being on opposite sides of the road, we wonder how many customers routinely walked into the wrong Bank…
