The North Eastern
Banking Company opens a branch at Millfield in 1899, and this contributes a number of local bank
branches that will eventually come together as outlets of Martins Bank.
Millfield gains a sub
branch at Pallion in 1967, and although both branches make it through the
merger with Barclays, neither of them is open today. Our feature concerns the retirement of Mr S
W Fawcett, who at the end of September 1957 has clocked up forty-four years’
service with the Bank, twelve of them as Manager of Millfield Branch.

At the
close of business on September 27th, former colleagues and members of the
staff at Millfield branch were invited by Mr. S. W. Fawcett to afternoon tea
at the Grand Hotel, Sunderland, to mark the occasion of his retirement from
the Bank after 42 years' service. Mr. E. T.
Punshon, Manager of West Hartlepool branch, made the presentation of a pair
of binoculars and in a very apt speech outlined Mr. Fawcett's career in the
Bank. Mr. Fawcett, as was only to be expected, replied most effectively. Mr. Fawcett joined
the Bank in 1915 at West Hartlepool and after a period of service with H.M.
Forces, 1917-19, returned to duty at Middlesbrough in 1919. In 1928 he was
transferred to D.G.M. Staff at Newcastle upon Tyne and in 1931 opened the new
sub-branch at Newport Road, Middlesbrough. In 1934 he was appointed Manager
at Chester Road, and of Millfield in 1945. Throughout
his career Mr. Fawcett took an interest in many social activities and was
particularly successful on the bowling green. Mrs.
Fawcett was present at the function and was presented with a bouquet of
flowers. Mr. Fawcett will be remaining in
Sunderland after his retirement.
