The Bank of Liverpool and
Martins opens a sub branch at Hendon in Sunderland in 1924. It is one of a long line of branches in
this part of the North East, many of which come to Martins Bank through the
merger of the North Eastern Bank with the Bank of Liverpool. In this
advertisement taken out by the bank in the local press in 1929, the generic
details include the latest financial results and the number of branches of
the bank. Six Sunderland Branches are mentioned by name, with Fawcett Street
and Chester Road being important local main branches, to which Hendon,
Millfield, Monkwearmouth and Southwick are sub-Branches. We have most of the
branch details in the Branch Information section below, but sadly no images
of Hendon sub-Branch have yet surfaced... This Branch first appears in
the Annual Report and Accounts of the Bank of Liverpool and Martins in 1924,
where it is listed as a sub-Branch to Sunderland (20 Fawcett Street). During the lifetime of the modern-day
Martins Bank, there will have a total of eleven Branches and sub-Branches in
Sunderland, including temporary offices. Hendon sub-Branch is closed
by Martins in 1964, and replaced by another nearby in GRANGETOWN. Whilst this is a modernised replacement, it is
unfortunately surplus to Barclays’ requirements, and is closed in the Summer
of 1969 before the merger takes place… If you can help with images and/or
information about this or any of the almost 1000 premises that have been used
as Branches of Martins Bank, please do get in touch with us at the usual
