By
far the largest concentration of Martins Bank branches is found in the North
East of England, with more than three hundred branches added by the mergers
with the Carlisle and Cumberland Bank and the North Eastern Banking
Company. County Durham ranks easily
alongside Lancashire and Yorkshire for sheer numbers of outlets, yet
throughout its forty-year existence, the modern Martins Bank Limited is
always on the look out for towns and villages in which to open viable
branches. At this point we are still
firmly in the days before the ubiquity of banking by machine and internet, so
a comprehensive Branch network is essential to attract good business. We have
already mentioned the massive branch building and opening programme that runs from the late 1950s until 1968, elsewhere
in our Online Archive. Many of these
branches only see the light of day for a year or two before Barclays closes
them due to duplication of business. |

Sunderland Pallion branch opens in 1967, and is strong enough to
survive into the twenty-first century, closing in April 2000. As a Martins Bank sub branch to Millfield,
Pallion is not self
accounting, but a nightsafe service is provided, as are full
banking hours across a six-day week. We are sorry that we have no period photos of this branch, but our
friends at Google Maps can show us how the building looks in the twenty-first
century. If you can help with information or images regarding this or any of
the 1000 buildings used as Branches by Martins Bank over the years, please do
get in touch with us at the usual address: martinsbankarchive@btinternet.com. |
