As early as 1952, when Martins Bank Magazine visits the original Sevenoaks Branch at St Botolph’s road, the talk is of that office being too small, too far away from the main thrust of the town’s commercial activity, and of a suitable alternative needing to be found as soon as possible:

“Our branch at Sevenoaks, which we visited on 15th May, has the distinction of being the smallest branch so far featured in this series of articles. At one time under the control of Tunbridge Wells it is now answerable direct to District Office. It is situated opposite the station, far away, alas, from the main street and the imposing positions occupied by the other banks, but better premises are being sought and this problem will be solved in time.”

SIXTEEN years later, the Bank finally moves the title of Sevenoaks Branch to the new premises shown here, which are at 12 London Road, and the original office becomes Tubs Hill Sub Branch. Despite being much nearer to the town centre, and that all important customer “footfall”, Sevenoaks London Road does not have much to say for itself – perhaps coming into being as it does, so late in Martins Bank’s History – but it does survive under Barclays’ ownership until 1977 when the Bank moves the Business to Station Parade…
