As if a cluster of four branches in Bootle, Liverpool was not confusing enough, (many situated in the same road as each other), a similar situation occurs in Manchester with Martins Bank’s Branches in the Cheetham area.  There is Cheetham Branch itself – that’s No 25 Cheetham Hill Road.  then there’s Cheetham Hill Road Branch, that’s at No 209a Cheetham Hill Road, BUT originally it is known as Cheetham Hill Branch. Until 1941 there was also a branch at No 87 Cheetham Hill Road, that came to Martins from the Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank, and this was originally known as Cheetham Branch.  Confused? – you are not alone.  Where 209a Cheetham Hill Road meets Elizabeth Street, the Branch, like so many others straddles a corner, giving Martins even more prominence.  A little bit of ornamental stonework is added to give a sense of security to this otherwise red brick street corner.  By the time of the  merger with Barclays, this branch is a sub branch to Cheetham, but still opens for more than twenty hours each week including Saturdays.  Cheetham Hill Road survives until 1973.
