Martins Bank 1928+

Sep 1.jpg

1963 is a VERY busy year for Martins Bank – a number of Branches all over England and Wales are given a long awaited and much needed makeover, others are closed and moved to new premises, some are knocked down and rebuilt.  The Bank is also busy adding sub-Branches to industrial sites and workplaces including Cattle Markets, Universities, and in this case, a Hospital. Broadgreen is Martins Bank’s only hospital sub branch, and lasts surprisingly well, just making it into the twenty-first century before serving its final batch of hospital customers in April 2000…

In Martins time, Broadgreen Hospital is a sub branch to Old Swan, and opens each Thursday afternoon for the convenience of staff and patients. This picture is the of the original entrance to the hospital, which is closest to the view that 1960s customers will have had.  Redevelopment of the site has brought new buildings and a new main block.  The picture is courtesy of SUE ADAIR who is a contributor to the incredible Geograph Project, of which more details can be found at the site .  We have no image of the Branch counter itself, and if you can help with images or memories of this or any of Martins 1000+ Branch buildings, please do get in touch with us at the usual address:
