Durham Branch is opened in 1897, by the North Eastern Banking Company. Along with its sub-Branch at Langley Park, Durham becomes a Branch of the Bank of Liverpool in 1914. Later, under the Martins name, two further sub-Branches are added – in 1965 at Durham University, and in 1967 at Carrville.

Like many of the Bank’s older Branches, Durham is internally reconstructed in the early 1960s. This picture (above) features in Martins Bank Magazine along with a gallery of colour images from other Branches, under the general title of “design in banking”. We can only feel sorry for the confused customer who, upon entry to the newly decorated Manager’s room, finds such a riot of mis-match - a complete assault upon the senses! Knowing what we know today of the inefficiency of electric bar fires, it’s easy to imagine an overheated Manager with a scorched desk interviewing a freezing customer who is forced to sit next to those nightmarish curtains by a cold window. At least the rest of the Branch interior is easier on the eye, as can be seen in this lovely colour publicity image which appears in Martins Bank’s Annual Report and Accounts for 1961, accompanied by the following rather short description:

{“The interior of the old established Branch at Durham has been completely re-planned and extended”.}
