Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank

Sep 1.jpg

Martins Bank has two branches in Widnes, one at Victoria Road, and this one at Derby Road which is an original branch of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank. During Martins’ time, Widnes (along with Warrington) is still in Lancashire and to confuse things further, the sub-Branch at Derby Road is also known as Farnworth Branch.  Both Widnes offices survive the merger with Barclays by a number of years.  Barclays has a futher branch in the town known as Simms Cross, and our editor remembers well, installing new computer equipment at all of the Widnes Branches in the late 1980s.   By the end of the 1960s, Derby Road opens daily on reduced hours including a half hour lunch break, and for two hours on Saturday morning.  The branch is closed by Barclays at the beginning of 1994.

In Service: 1904 until 24 January 1994
