New Mills is actually in
Derbyshire, but the postal address for Martins Bank’s branch there, is
Stockport Cheshire. An original
office of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank, New Mills comes to the Bank in
1928 when that bank merges with the Bank of Liverpool and Martins to create
the modern day Martins Bank. From 1935
the branch is run as a sub office to Stockport, the last Manager being Mr W R
Bowness. The earliest recorded manager
of New Mills under the L and Y Bank is Mr W Rigby in 1922. He is replaced by
Mr Bowness in 1926. During World War
II the Branch is managed by Nora Adams, one of the Bank’s army of women
Clerks in Charge.

In the 1960s New Mills opens
for a full six day banking week and is self accounting. It survives the
merger with Barclays, but only just, lasting less than one year and closing
in late 1970. Our feature below
concerns Mr F Owen who retires from the post of Clerk in Charge at New Mills
in 1963…
  At
the end of March Mr. F. Owen, Clerk-in-Charge at New Mills branch, retired
after forty-four years' service and he and his wife entertained present and
former colleagues at a dinner party at the Cheadle Hulme Club. After a most enjoyable meal Mr. J. C. Higenbottam
(Manager, Stockport) referred to the high regard which colleagues and customers
alike had always felt for Frank Owen. A
bouquet was presented to Mrs. Owen by Mrs. Higenbottam. Mr. R. Tanner
(Manchester District Inspector) then conveyed the good wishes of the
District General Management and in presenting Mr. Owen on behalf of the subscribers
with a stainless-steel tea set, spoke of his sterling services to the Bank.
In a witty and very amusing reply Mr. Owen, who had earlier been a guest at
luncheon of Mr. E. H. Priestley (Manchester District General Manager), entertained
the guests with several amusing anecdotes culminating in the reading of a
letter from a customer which proved that banking is not always as dull as it
is sometimes thought to be. Mr. Owen entered the Lancashire and Yorkshire
Bank in 1919 and served at branches in the Manchester District throughout
his career. He was appointed Clerk-in-Charge at New Mills in 1954.
