open through several amalgamations and mergers until it being closed by
Barclays in 1989. The Bank of Liverpool and Martins’ rivals in 1922, the Lancashire and
Yorkshire Bank also has its own branch in Bolton, at 25 Bradshawgate, which
desite the large office at 12 Deansgate, acutally remains open for a number

There are no
visits to Bolton Branch by martins Bank Magazine, but we do have a retirement
write-up from 1959 when Mr Lee, Manager at Bolton for thirteen years, calls
it a day after a career which commenced at the Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank
and spanned forty-four years… At
the end of February Mr. Lee retired from the managership of Bolton branch, a
position which he had held for thirteen years. Mr. and Mrs. Lee celebrated the occasion by entertaining
past and present members of the staff, together with many personal friends
and their wives. Using the Manager's room and with the counter converted to a
buffet, the caterers excelled themselves both in the provision of edibles and
with the decorative effects. The
presentation in the form of a cheque, which will be used in the purchase of a
powered lawn mower, was made by Mr. Heyes, the Assistant Manager, who has
served with Mr. Lee through the whole of his thirteen years as Manager of the
branch. When Mr. Lee responded he
acknowledged the tributes which Mr. Heyes had so charmingly paid to him and
expressed his pleasure in having so many of his old boys present. After a gift of flowers had been presented by Miss
Ridgway, Mr. Hill, the newly appointed Manager, expressed to Mrs. Lee good
wishes for her health and happiness.
Mr. Lee joined the staff of the Lancashire
and Yorkshire Bank in 1915 at Bury. Demobilised in 1919 from the Royal
Flying Corps, he returned to Bury where he remained until 1930. From 1930
until 1936 he served on the Inspection Staff and was then appointed Manager
at Darwen. In 1946 he was appointed to Bolton, having spent a short period in
the capacity of Sub Manager at Brown Street, Manchester. |
