Following the closure in 1968 of Middlesbrough
Newport Road Branch, this brand-new sub-Branch arrives on the corner of
Enfield Street and Parliament Road.  A
busy little branch, operated over the full six-day banking week,
Middlesbrough Parliament Road also offers night safe facilities, indicating a
steady trade from both private and business customers.  This shiny new office at Parliament Road
actually  fits in well with Barclays’
plans, and makes it safely through the 1969 merger, remaining open for
another seventeen years. The images of the Branch from the Barclays
Collection show a very shiny new Branch, ready to be handed over by Martins
to the new owners at the end of 1969. The interior makes for a successful
sub-Branch – minimal furnishings, room for a queue without compromising
privacy, and an office for private interviews.  Where Barclays and Martins differ, is found
within Martins’ consistent approach to making its Branches “unique”. The idea
of branding is kept to a minimum, running mostly to the outside signage.
Inside, each branch is decorated and designed to have its own bright and
  friendly, welcoming personality…
