OUT AND ABOUT – ON THE ROAD WITH MARTINS BANK

Sep 1.jpg

Following decades of amalgamation with other banks, the Bank of Liverpool, the former Martin’s Private Bank and the Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank resurface in 1928 as MARTINS BANK LIMITED. The Bank doesn’t opt for the “slash and burn” policy we see so often in today’s business world, choosing instead to listen to its shareholders, and more importantly its customers, before designing the kind the of bank that people will want to use, recommend to their friends, and of course trust without question. Staff are not left out either, and although these are the times when men are considered sole bread winner and women used as ornaments, there is a sense of “family” at Martins Bank that is still talked about today by those who were there.

WHY NOT ALSO VISIT THESE PAGES

Sep 1.jpg

A major statement of the Bank’s independence is of course the lavish new Head Office building at 4 Water Street, Liverpool. A policy of expansion follows, with Martins determined to be represented all over England and Wales, and in the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. Ahead of some very expensive new builds, the Bank takes temporary branches to get a foothold in a particular town or City, before finding the best location in which to open a permanent office. This is all backed up by the Bank’s presence at agricultural shows and other trade events all over the United Kingdom. Our features – Mobile Branches and Trade Stands – show the fleet of mobile branch caravans and also many of the elaborate and colourful stands used to attract new business. On this page, and with the help of publicity leaflets and advertising copy, we take in the sheer number of events visited in two particular years – 1956 when the Mobile Branches and Trade Stands are at full stretch around the Country, and 1969 when Barclays begins to provide some of the trade stand venues from which BOTH Banks can trade before their merger is complete…

Sep 1.jpg

This leaflet (left) lists the events at which the Bank’s Mobile Branches will be in attendance throughout Show Season 1956. The newspaper advertisements (right) from 1954-1956 are printed in the same generic form, with just the location date and time changed to suit each show. Advantage is also taken of the local nature of the events to add the name and address of a local branch at the end of the wording.

1969 Banking at the Shows Leaflet - Beryl Creer - MBA

This leaflet (left) lists the events at which Martins Mobile Branches will be in attendance throughout Show Season 1969. This time, the banking services available at many of the events will be hosted by Barclays at their own Trade Stands, but there are one or two notable and prestigious exceptions.

Sep 1.jpg

Martins Bank has its own Branch on Centre Court at the All England Tennis Club, Wimbledon. It also has a permanent show Branch at the Great Yorkshire Showground, in Harrogate, which was opened in 1962, and kept on by Barclays until March 2001.

Being “out and about” forms a major part of Martins Bank’s networking policy for more than forty years, and as Banks are systematically removed from small towns and villages, it will soon be easy to forget the huge role played in even our tiniest communities by local bank branches, and the presence of the staff we know by name going to extremes to be helpful at trade stands, and in caravans at everything from a local fete to a major sporting occasion. The most we can expect nowadays is the occasional visit from a “Bank on Wheels”, but nothing quite as exciting as an elaborate stand laid out like a stage set, or the romance of the Bank’s caravans spending six months of the year on the road…
