Orpington is one of the original branches of Martin’s Private Bank that together will help build the national prescence of the newly created Martins Bank Limited from 1928 onwards. The old bank’s fifteen branches are in London and the South East, many in the Kentish towns that border with the Capital. There is also a sub branch at St Mary Cray, but this is closed for the Second World War and not re-opened. Orpington Branch is amongst those taken on by Barclays, and it lasts until 1977. Despite the age and also the historical dignificance of this Branch it seems that Martins Bank Magazine did not feel it necessary to visit!

Apart from the two internal images shown on this page, and a small staff gallery, we only have the following short piece about the retirement of Mr N A Beet on the last day of 1968…

at Mr Beet's request, ceremony was dispensed with when he retired as Manager at Orpington on 31 December. Mr Chudley, second-in-command, wished him a very long and happy retirement on behalf of all the staff.

Mr Beet was presented with a bound book containing the signatures of many colleagues and friends, together with a handsome cheque.

Mr Beet entered the Bank at Darwen in 1924 and moved to London in 1928. Apart from four years with H.M. Forces his career continued in the London District and he was appointed Manager at Mottingham in 1955 and at Orpington in 1957.
