Longfield Branch – at your

(public) convenience…

Martins Bank’s Longfield branch has great character, although there is no escaping the fact that it is clearly reminiscent of a block of public toilets. A selection selection of images of this branch were left behind by Martins, which our friends at Barclays have made available to us. Martins Bank Magazine never visits Longfield, but they do print a photograph of a member of the staff showing the rewards of his sporting prowess. Keen-eyed readers of Martins Bank Magazine will note that the image below has been slightly modified.

It shows Mr E D V Garrett of the Bank’s Longfield staff, who is the 1959 winner of the cup for the men’s singles tennis tournament in the London District, given by the sports club. Out of shot is the previous year’s winner, Mr Churchland of HANOVER SQUARE branch, who does feature in our staff gallery for that page. Longfield dates back to the 1920s and is one of a number of “second wave” Branches in Kent, built or opened by the Bank of Liverpool and Martins, and complementing the original Kentish Branches of Martin’s Private Bank.
