Martins Bank 1928+

Tothill Street Branch opens in 1930, and in the tradition of Martins’ Southern Branches, proudly displays the London Grasshopper at right angles to the building, above the front door.  Like most of the London Branches, Tothill Street is a standalone, offering all the services of the bank including lending decisions throughout the six day banking week.  In 1966 Tothill Street will join nearly forty other London Branches in having its daily work processed by computer.  Martins’ Managers are known for their incredibly long service, and even in 1967, we still see Mr Ellis, the Manager, finishing an astonishing forty-four years with the Bank.  Nowadays, ten years would be seen as an achievement! Martins Bank Magazine takes up the story…

In Service: 22 December 1930 until 21 May 1971

on February 28 Mr Ellis entertained past and present colleagues at Simpsons in the Strand to mark his retirement after nearly 44 years' service which began at Water Street in 1923. He came to London in 1931 and was with the Royal Navy from 1941 to 1946. Shortly after his return he was appointed Manager at Bexhill, in 1951 he became Manager at Swanley and in 1955 at Tothill Street.

In deference to his wishes there was no formal 1955 to 1967 Mr M I Ellis Manager MBM-Su67P54.jpgpresentation but a cheque was handed to him by Miss Patricia Leach, which Mr Ellis said would be used to purchase an automatic wrist watch, while Mrs Ellis was presented with a bouquet by Mrs Margaret Thorne.

Mr Ellis was entertained by the General Management at Head Office and by the District General Management at Lombard Street shortly before his retirement.
