Craven Bank

Ingleton is a spectacular village in the West Riding of Yorkshire, that like so many of its neighbouring towns and villages is forced to use a postal address that implies quite wrongly that it is in Lancashire!  Whether taking part in the famous Three Peaks Race, buying a Wensleydale cheese, walking the moors or just admiring the view, those who have visited the Martins sub-Branch there have always received a warm welcome from staff who go to extremes to be helpful.  The main branch is at Bentham, from where staff are sent to Ingleton each Tuesday and Friday for the banking convenience of locals and visitors alike.  Ingleton Branch remains open at Main Street after the merger with Barclays but it is closed in the Summer of 1977 and moved to new premises in The Square.

At its new address the Branch lasts a further thirty-eight years, closing in March 2015. Bentham and Ingleton are original branches of the Craven Bank, and both were sub Brnaches to Settle until 1950 when Bentham became a full Branch with Ingleton as its sub-Branch. Our images from Barclays’ collection show this little office in the early 1960s (right), and at the time of the merger of Martins Bank with Barclays Bank in 1969 (below), where we can see from the signs in the window that Barclaycard is already welcome, and customers are reminded exactly who the new owners of their Branch are…
