Bank of Liverpool and Martins

Wanted an unusual looking building on the Wirral. Found Martins Bank Helsby. Despite being nearer to places such as Ellesmere Port and Warrington, Helsby is actually a self accounting sub-Branch to Chester. Opened by the Bank of Liverpool and Martins Limited in July 1922 as a full branch, and with its own manager until 1934, Martins Bank Helsby operates under a Clerk in Charge, and remits its daily work to the clearings.

Most decisions on lending must be referred to the Managers at Chester for approval.Helsby Branch operates a full six day banking week, suggesting a fairly high daily flow of customer transactions. Mr G F Hughes (of whom we are still seeking a photo) serves as Clerk in Charge from 1946 to 1969.
