Halifax is another of those large Northern towns to be suddenly awash with Branches of Martins Bank, following its creation in 1928 from the amalgamation of the Bank of Liverpool and Martins with the Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank. With two full Branches at No 2 and No 16, a third would be too much, and this time it is the turn of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Branch at Commercial Street to fall on its sword in the name of consolidation. We might tend to think of Bank mergers, acquisitions and Branch closures as a Twenty-First Century phenomenon, but clearly, business being business, it has been going on for YEARS! Commercial Street closes its doors before the end of 1928.
