Halifax is another of those large Northern towns to be suddenly awash with Branches, following the creation of Martins Bank out of the amalgamation of the Bank of Liverpool and Martins and the Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank in 1928.  With two full Branches at Nos 2 and 16 Silver Street, a third would be one too many and in the name of consolidation, the Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank’s Branch at Commercial Street falls on its sword.  We might think of Bank mergers, acquisitions and Branch closures as a phenomenon of the 21st Century, but business being business, this has been going on for YEARS!  Commercial Street closes its doors before the end of 1928.
