The Bank of Liverpool and Martins opens a Branch in
Chislehurst at 57 High Street in 1922, and it soon becomes the main Branch of
the Bank in the town. |

Our images show the announcement of the new branch, and its
first listing in the Annual Report and Accounts of the Bank of Liberpool and
Martins for the year 1922. Initially the main Chislehurst office was Water
Tower Branch, at Chislehurst Common – an original Branch of Martin’s Private
Bank – which is downgraded, and survives as a sub-Office until 1966 when
local redevelopment sees the demolition of the Water Tower itself. You can
read more about that Branch on our CHISLEHURST WATER TOWER page, in a feature written for Martins Bank Magazine in
1948 by the then Manager at Chislehurst, Mr H Monk. By 1936 Martins Bank has the opportunity to
move to larger premises at 63 HIGH STREET, which has a corner aspect – a favoured site
for a banks, because it gives a presence in two streets at once! We are grateful to our friends at the
Chislehurst History Society for bringing the existence of 57 High Street as a
branch of Martins to our attention.
