It’s 1910 and the North Eastern Banking Company is busy opening up new branches to attract deposits and build the business.  Coxhoe is opened as a sub branch to West Cornforth, although under Martins Bank the situation is reversed.  In 1914 the North Eastern Bank becomes the latest to amalgamate with the Bank of Liverpool, strengthening its position in this part of England.  A letter is sent to all North Eastern managers asking them to defer taking holiday leave until after a meeting of shareholders had taken place.  This should ensure that any customer worried about any aspect of the two banks merging can be reassured.  It is noted in the Times newspaper of 21 July 1914 that if the amalgamation is confirmed by the shareholders, the Bank of Liverpool will become the largest provincial bank in the country.  Despite some misgivings by a few shareholders of the North East Bank, a very good deal is on the table, and the two banks merge.

How lovely to see Coxhoe Branch in the twenty-first Century as a café and takeaway, complete with its own cash machine! We wonder how many tourists have entered, mistaking it for an actual bank?
