LIVERPOOL DISTRICT OFFICE

As Martins Bank expands, the need for DISTRICT OFFICES with strong a local command of the business becomes essential. Many of the Bank’s District Offices are based in the former Head Offices of banks that have merged with Martins, but some, in areas such as the Midlands and South West, which are areas of expansion for the Bank, are added to existing large branches or put into purpose built premises. By the end of the Second world War, it becomes necessary to split – within the same building - the running of the Liverpool District from that of Head Office, and with many of the Bank’s largest corporate customers also operating out of Liverpool, a district Office for the Liverpool area is something that is already long overdue in 1945. The new District is looked after by the newly appointed District general Manager, MR MUNGO CONACHER, and it comprises branches on Merseyside and the Wirral Peninsula, including parts of Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Cheshire and South Lancashire, the six branches on the Isle of Man, and North Wales branches in Caernarvonshire, Denbighshire and Flint.

Liverpool District Office – Just like its counterparts in the rest of the country – is divided into a number of departments that cater for specific local needs, such as advances to customers, maintenance and building of premises, staffing requirements and so on. There is a Department for the District General Manager and his staff, and for the district inspection team. As everything at Liverpool District Office is run from the Head Office Building, there are no specific images of Liverpool District Office. However, the names of the staff who work in its various departments have been well documented, so we have a large selection of photographs to show you in our gallery below. LIVERPOOL COMPUTER CENTRE, established in 1959 at nearby Derby House, is also a District Office Department, run by Edna Devaynes (above, right), whose image also appears in the gallery.
