Pronunciation guide – Meols, it rhymes with smells, and
although our branch does resemble a public convenience, that is (in the interests
of decency) where all olfactory comparisons must end. LEGO® enthusiasts
everywhere will surely want to bombard the company with requests to produce a
model of the branch and its wonderful surroundings, as seen in this amazing
image in which 1960s suburbia is brought vividly back to life... Image

© Barclays Ref 0030/1877 Opened by the Bank of Liverpool and Martins in 1926, Meols Branch continues in service beyond
the merger of Martins and Barclays and survives until October 1992. During World War 2 it is one of many
branches kept open and running by an army of women Clerks in Charge. Meols
continues to operate as a sub-Branch to Hoylake, until some time between 1960
and 1969 when it becomes a full branch, but sadly we do not have the image of
the only Meols Manager to be mentioned in the Staff records, Mr E Gray. At
the time of the merger with Barclays Meols is given its own sorting code as a
full Branch of that Bank. |
