Ice-creams and saucy postcards, paying the bill to the landlady from hell, it
all adds up – and in the days before debit cards and cash machines, Martins
Bank has the answer by filling Britain’s favourite holiday
resort with Branches! Thanks to the Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank’s original
prescence here, you are never too far from a Branch here on the Fylde Coast,
and South
Shore is one of two offices of Martins Bank on Lytham Road alone, confirming
that Blackpool must surely have almost as many Branches as ice cream
carts! Our thanks go to friend of the
Archive Derek Longden, who helped us to identify South Shore Branch from this
photograph held by our Archive, which was taken around 1945. Derek’s
amazing knowledge of trams has helped us out on more than one occasion. |

Each time,
the tram route number has been the key to finding out where a picture was
taken. Sadly, South Shore, which is a sub branch to Lytham Road, joins the
select number of branches to fall on their swords and close just before the
merger with Barclays takes place. Nowadays, the building looks after another
important aspect of keeping the holidaymaker happy, by providing that all
important hairdo ! |
