Haverton Hill, which is a
sub-Branch to Billingham, comes to Martins Bank through the merger in 1914 of
the Bank of Liverpool and the North Eastern Banking Company. This might look like the corner shop, and
it’s also a little bit bleak to say the least, but don’t be fooled by what
look like dirty windows - some of it is at least a reflection of the view
from the other side of the road! On
the face of it this little Branch would seem to have enough of what today is
referred to as “footfall” – that is enough customers to make it economically
viable. By 1969 the Branch is still operating across the six-day banking
week, albeit on reduced hours.
Barclays takes it over, but this little outpost simply isn’t viable,
and time is called on Haverton Hill in 1972.
