The Bank of Liverpool
opens a Branch at Toxteth to in 1888 and so begins a one hundred and four
year relationship with the area that sees everything from the money rich times
of the late nineteenth century, to the riots of the 1980s and beyond. In view
of this record of service, that Martins Bank’s former Branch now sells
“Bargain Booze” does not really seem a fitting end for this lovely old
building but, since the late 1960s, change has come to every part of England
and Wales, and altered many of the Bank’s Branches beyond recognition. For our Toxteth feature, we have a
retirement write-up for a long serving member of the staff - After forty-four years, the last six of these
as Manager of Toxteth Branch, Mr MacDonald retires, and receives the usual
farewell gathering and gifts from his colleagues and friends…

on a cold and wintry evening at
the end of November, 26 colleagues and friends gathered at Toxteth Branch to
extend warm good wishes to Kenneth Macdonald, the Manager, retiring after 44
years' service. Mr I. Buchanan (Liverpool
District General Manager) paid tribute to Mr Macdonald for long and
dedicated service to both Bank and customers, and particularly for his
valuable training of staff. He presented him with a slide projector and expressed
his best wishes for a long and happy retirement. Mrs Macdonald was handed a
bouquet by Miss Foster. Thanking Mr Buchanan and his friends for their gift and their
kindly thoughts, Mr Macdonald said he and his wife would now be able to
indulge further their hobby of photography, even at the risk of boring their
friends with holiday photographs. The guests
were then entertained to a buffet meal. Earlier,
Mr Macdonald had lunched with the General Management and with the District
General Management at Head Office, and on November 30 the Liverpool Assistant
District Manager called at the Branch to wish him well. Mr Macdonald joined the Bank at Head Office in 1921 and
apart from three years in the R.A.F. spent all his career in the Liverpool
District. He was appointed Manager at St Luke's Branch, Southport, in 1955
and became Manager at Toxteth in 1960.
