# Littleborough comes to
Martins Bank in 1928 when the Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank and the Bank of Liverpool and Martins amalgamate to form Martins Bank Limited.
Whilst we do not have the exact opening date for this Branch, it is listed as
already being open in 1922, according to the Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank’s
own records. Little by name AND nature, Littleborough is one of smallest full
branches of the Bank – until 1957 when it becomes a self accounting sub
branch to Rochdale. This coincides with the retirement of the last Manager
of the branch, Mr T E Leah, and you can read more about this event
below. The story end when Martins Bank
Littleborough is closed, and the business transferred to Barclays Bank’s own
Branch at 56 church Street at the time of the merger of the two Banks in
1969… |

At
the end of March Mr. T. E. Leah retired after 43 years' service, during the course
of which he never absented himself for even half a day through illness. So
far as we know this record is unique. On March 29th
he invited over twenty of his colleagues for dinner at the Beech Hotel,
Littleborough, to mark the occasion, and his wife and daughter were present.
Mr. S. Dennett, Manager at Sowerby Bridge, presided as the colleague who has
known Mr. Leah longer than any other colleague and the presentation on behalf
of subscribers of a dinner wagon and an afternoon tea table was made by Mr.
G. C. Ryding, Mr. Leah's successor.
Miss J. Marshall, of the Littleborough staff, presented a bouquet to
Mrs. Leah. In thanking his friends Mr. Leah
invited them to call on him in his new home in Meols. Mr. Leah entered the Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank in
1914 and after periods of service at Hebden Bridge and Sowerby Bridge was
appointed Manager at Littleborough in 1943.
