A touch of the unexotic… On the highly imaginatively titled
“Admin Road” sits Martins Bank’s totally unexotic but extremely practical Sub
Branch at Kirkby Industrial Estate. It
certainly looks as if things might just be a bit noisy when heavy rain hits
that corrugated roof, and perhaps the staff and customers have to shout at
one another to be heard! From 1957 to
1961, Kirkby and Croxteth are served by a Martins mobile Branch. When the
Bank opens a permanent Kirkby Branch, the Trading Estate office becomes a
sub-branch to Kirkby, which is in turn a self accounting sub-branch to
Liverpool Clubmoor. It opens in 1946, shortly after the extention of the
tramway alongside what is now the A580 to the trading estate itself. Up to the time of the merger with Barclays,
the Branch opens Monday to Friday only. Under Barclays it survives until
1983. Although Martins Branch directory uses the words “industrial estate”,
it is still known today as the trading
estate… |
