A question of economy? Martins
Bank’s Branch at Lindal in Furness, along with some of the older and tinier village
sub-branches, is likely to remain something of a mystery to us. |

From the
information available, we see that it is opened by the Bank of Liverpool and
Martins in September 1922, and that it closes again just nine years
later. As is the case for many of Martins
Bank’s pre 1940 branches, we are still looking for surviving images, and as
we slowly build our second staff database for the years prior to 1946, staff
records for some of these tiny outlets are equally conspicuous by their
absence. Perhaps Lindal is not so
successful as it is surrounded by several other branches – at Askam, Barrow,
Kirkby and Dalton in Furness, not to mention Ulverston and Greenodd, but it
is worth noting that Lindal is one of several branches and sub branches to be
closed in 1931, and this does seem to tie in with the building of Martins’
lavish new HEAD OFFICE in Liverpool, and the complete rebuilding
of London Office at 68 LOMBARD STREET. |
