A’s and B’s in
Northumberland… It seems strange that some of Martins Bank’s
sub-Branches have manged to outlive their parent Branch by a considerable
number of years. Alnmouth is a case in
point, having been inherited along with its main Branch, Alnwick, in the
amalgamation with the North Eastern Banking Company in 1914. Alnwick itself is closed by Barclays in
1978, but Alnmouth continues to provide a banking service for another fifteen
years. This tiny Sub-Branch has no mention in Martins Bank Magazine’s Article
“As and Bs in Northumberland” from 1965, so we have no narrative to describe
life at the branch. However, this
wonderfully evocative image from Barclays does, we think, show Alnmouth in its prime. Although the opening hours are short, this office operates in the
mid-morning of each weekday which would suggest a fairly constant flow of
business from local people and traders paying in their takings… |
