Not quite “Always There…”

Sep 1.jpg

At the mouth of the River Hamble lies Warsash, home to the third of Martins Bank’s Southampton area branches, the first two being found at SOUTHAMPTON ABOVE BAR, and SOUTHAMPTON DOCKS.  As late as 1968 the Bank opens a fourth branch at HEDGE END.  Boating being such a way of life in Warsash, the area makes the perfect backdrop for the 1980s BBC Television series “Howards’ Way”… Our gallery shows Warsash as both Martins and Barclays, inside and out.

As Barclays has a new Branch planned in Warsash, the name above the door changes, but the much-loved Martins Bank hanging sign is allowed to remain until the business is moved in 1972.  Of the four Branches originally opened by Martins Bank in various parts of Southampton, only High Street remains for any decent length of time beyond the 1969 merger with Barclays, serving customers until 1983. The Docks is first to go in 1935, and High Street Replaces City Office at 139 Above Bar.  Although Hedge End is still open today, it has been moved a couple of doors down from its original location. As our towns and Cities change and adapt to the twenty-first Century, is it plain to see that very little in life is “Always there…”
